City Gate After Effects, Maya, Photoshop October 2011
This finished matte painting was constructed over a 3d render provided kindly by Nick Marshall. It was a simple block construction, with the added instructions create a town gate, use the blocks as point of interest.
So I set to work on it, I decided on at Tudor theme as I was inspired by the jaw dropping town sequences from the new production called Anonymous.
I created a texture library, consulted architects Historians, and done some time walking round tudor towns, Arned with this research I blocked in a this town scene matching textures and buildings.
I had to recreate the model in Sketchup to check perspective on the round towers on the castle. The hardest part was matching floor textures on a flat floor, so in the end I used a simple card system to build it up. This is the paint ready for the compositor, so aerial perspective has been removed, this is to enable atmospherics and volumetric lighting to be applied more successfully in Nuke.
I have not made plans to to a 2.5d camera move yet, however for my next project would be to work on that.
