Cottage: First Men In The Moon

I started off from a large panoramic image and painted out all the modern greeblies. The furnace to the rear was made up from several images. However I encountered several problems with perspective so I used Sketch Up to make a maquette. The river is painted. There has been a lot of painting in this. Most of it hopefully invisible.

The file size was at 9k which enabled fine detail to be painted in. A lot of this is lost when downscaled. I have to remember that HD will show the flaws. This is a mixture of real photographs and fine art painting.

I have left this as a clean plate, this will be used for a camera mapping exercise so particles and volumetrics will be used later.

There is a WIP on the digital matte painting forum if you are interested in following from conception to finished piece.

Look forward to seeing you there
I have attempted my own speed sketch using just the wacom tablet and a pencil setting.

I normally do sketches on paper then scan in.

This is for a sculpture project, as I may have the opportunity to look at zbrush.

I am not a good artist yet but I will share my progress as I develop. I will probably learn loads. I gave my self a time limit of an hour to do this as I wanted to get more fluid marks.

I look forward to your comments and hope you enjoy this.

This is the final image from a thread called Matte from the beginning, http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=196&t=690213.

The start image was a panoramic photo from the Village of Stamford. Stamford has been used a s a period location for several hollywood films. Daniel Day Lewis and Penelope Cruz, were filming a mile away for a new period drama/musical.

The image was put together in photoshop and corrected. The snow was done in photoshop. The sweet shop was modelled in Sketch Up and painted in photoshop. The snow was hand painted in photoshop. A lot of research was carried out. The image then was placed in After Effects for the particle snow effect. Colour correction was carried out in AE as well.

The finished video though short is viewable here,

http://www.vimeo.com/2323946

This was a bare your soul exercise where I shared the process with fellow matte painters. I really value the open opinions and support given by fellow CG artists. I would like to give everyone here my blessings for a Happy and Safe New Year.

I wanted to thank the guys on the Matte Painting forum for all their help and support over the last year. I collected images of trees and mountains. the rest was painted using a wacom tablet. The hardest part was matching colours and getting contrast and hues correct. The Baubles were designed as a brushstroke. The tinsel was created using stars with the colour selector. My favourite part was designing the snowman as he was the first i built this year without my hands getting cold. Finally the piece was feeling a little flat and as i added noise on a fill layer to creat snow it came alive. I am really happy with this piece and i realised that photorealism and beatifully rendered images are not everything. It is about the emotion with the piece and this loose style feels more emotive to me. This was done in photoshop in the middle of the night whilst suffering from a bout of insomnia. I hope everyone enjoys this.

Done for the NHM digital matte painting challenge. The image originally of the British Natural history museum. The competition was in two parts to remove people and objects from a photograph into a clean plate. The seconf part was to show it in the future in a ruined london landscape whilst keeping the museum itself recognisable. This matte that i created took a long time to do. I had to go out and go to botanical gardens, woods to get reference shots. I really enjoyed this challenge as the support from the digital matte painting forum was phenomenal. I am only a beginner and though the image is not as highly polished as a professional matte painter it is something I am proud of. So my thanks to all at the CG society who gave me encouragement, look forward to my next image soon.

I have always loved science fiction as a kid, but i have always loved British Science fiction, Qatermass and the pit was something i watched without my parents knowledge and it scared me to death. I like surreality of alien tech in a urban environment, i have always wanted to paint the pit story but i am saving that for a rainy day. As a build up i decided to paint some scenes that would teach me techniques. This scene is when a alien craft crashes into the north sea. The crews of the oilrigs think it was plane crash so they send in a ad hoc rescue party to rescue the plane. The craft is a organic lifeform that has been bred for use as a interplanetry vessel. The north sea being a unforgiving place the poor creature has died and no sign of the crew of three. Unbeknownst the two of the crew have died and the bodies end up in norway. Whilst the solitary survivor washes up on the east coast of scotland. I would like a crit on this piece of work as I love the way the elements create a dangerous environment which is in human. This was done in photoshop using one oil rig reference the sea took 5 attempts at painting. This has come close to my vision and Qatermass and the pit will follow soon, please enjoy.

Using bryce6 and photoshop cs created this image in 4 hrs in the middle of the night. I had this vision in my head of a police chase after watching police wildest police chases. I am still learning how to paint in photoshop. I cannot afford a wacom tablet so I use a terrible Packard Bell Tablet, it has none of the wacom features. I would like a C&C for this, I need someone to push me in the right direction. I use another forum with some fantastic support. This more of a sketch than a final piece. The frog jumping clear is my favourite bit. I have a problem making photoshop look like oils. I have the imagination and I have no ego, if you think its bad tell me its the only way for me to get better. I have loads of imagination I want to share it for the world

I had to do a middle eastern picture which had the Qualities of the Arabian Nights without any religious symbology. I could use references such as the crescent moon. My client was concerned that I could upset people. This image was created for a christmas card for a large middle east company. They didnt want heavy political/religious overtones. The brief was that it had to be middle east, could be part of the Arabian Nights and must contain travel or exploration. This was really hard, I came up with this after banging my head of the desk a few times. I would like a crit on this even though the client was happy with the final image. Look forward to your comments.

This is an image for a student film that never saw the light of day. They wanted a bus to float through flood water circling round with the beam of the headlights playing on the office walls. I would in hindsight have the office windows lit and people looking out. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I would have also have put more debris in the water. I tried to suggest depth with the traffic lights. This was mainly a collection of photos that i had done and place together.

For a old movie it still made me jump. I like the thought of living ina self contained settlement somewhere unforgiving. This is really a pre vis render which i am working on. The 3d elements are done in Bryce 6 the rest is painting. I need A c&c for this as to how to make it more photoreal.

This was mainly photography but a lot of photo manipulation took place with mainly twenty source photos. Had to paint in some details but the change in resolution did not help with keeping them in. I would like some advice on what and where I went wrong. Had a disastrous attempt at photomapping in blender.
